Metamorphosis as a Dog

In class when asked if we had to undergo a metamorphosis, what animal we would chose to become it seemed the overwhelmingly popular answer was a dog. If Gregor had been transformed into a dog, I think the course of Metamorphosis would have taken a different turn. A dog body would still struggle to accomplish the tasks that humans could. For instance, opening the door still would have presented a challenge, but it would have involved less horrific imagery than dark liquid oozing from Gregor's jaws. His family and boss would have been more confused than revolted at the sight of Gregor, perhaps resulting in them aiming to be more helpful to acclimate Gregor to his adjusted state. In caring for Gregor, Grete would have had a much easier time. She would most likely not have been so uncomfortable just by the sight of him, leaving her more willing to interact with him. The book would have lost its commentary on isolationism, as Gregor would have been much more accepted by both his family and society as a dog is man's best friend, but a cockroach is his enemy.
